Gijs Bakker

The Netherlands , b. 1942

With an illustrious interdisciplinary practice spanning over 40 years, Gijs Bakker remains a pioneering force in contemporary jewellery and design. Initially studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Netherlands and the Konstfack Skolen Sweden, Bakker has gone on to build a career encompassing jewellery, furniture, interiors and public space. In 1993 along with Renny Ramakers, Bakker founded Droog Design, an influential collective of Dutch designers and thinkers. and 1996 cofounded Chi ha paura…? (Italian for Who is afraid of?), a foundation established to challenge the ideas and perceptions surrounding contemporary jewellery. Along side his highly regarded projects, Bakker has also taught within institutions such as the Design Academy Eindhoven and the Delft University of Technology. His work continues to be collected and exhibited internationally.
