Jonathan Wahl – Drawings

Jonathan Wahl | DRAWINGS
We are excited to introduce New York artist Jonathan Wahl, with a small group of drawings exploring pattern and reflection. In his Skewed Water series, the reflections are used as patterns in “collaged” drawings that further his interest in two-dimensional pattern and space. The drawings currently on view are sketches that further abstract the reflections with their graphic outlines. These sketches have the feeling of objects, and they reflect Wahl’s background in contemporary jewellery, as well as his large portraits of Jet Jewellery in charcoal. The sketches are also a bridge to Wahl’s monumental drawings of inverted light on water and negative drawings of waterfalls reflecting on climate change. All of these series reference the landscapes, tying them together with the artist’s love of the outdoors and the natural world.
Jonathan Wahl's fine art is part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the New York Historical Society the American Craft Museum, and numerous private collections. Wahl has been awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Emerging Artist Fellowship from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships one in Craft and one in Drawing and the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths Award for "Outstanding Achievement." His work has been featured or reviewed in publications as diverse as the New York Times, Art in America, The New Yorker, Architectural Digest, the Advocate Oprah Magazine, W Jewelry, Art Jewelry Forum, Metalsmith magazine, Harper’s Bazaar among others.
