Lin Cheung is a British jewellery artist, designer and educator whose practice explores the meanings, functions and cultural significance of jewellery. She studied Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at the University of Brighton before undertaking a jewellery residency with the Bishopsland Educational Trust. In 1997, she graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery.

Cheung’s work challenges conventional ideas about what jewellery is and how it is used. Drawing on everyday experiences, human relationships, identity and memory, she combines conceptual thinking with a detailed knowledge of materials and making processes. Her work is often witty and thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to reconsider familiar objects and the emotional meanings attached to them. In recent years, she has worked extensively with carved gemstones and stone.

Cheung has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Arts Foundation Award for Jewellery in 2001, the Jerwood Contemporary Makers Award in 2008, and both the Herbert Hofmann Prize and Françoise van den Bosch Award in 2018. She was also a finalist for the 2017 BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Craft Prize.

Alongside her artistic practice, Cheung has taught at Central Saint Martins, where she is a Reader in Jewellery. She is also known for designing the medals for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Her work is held in major international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
